It's not just the novelty of seeing someone say or do something they never did. Deepfakes have graduated from experimental curiosities to high-stakes weapons of deception. What sets the truly terrifying ones apart?
In May 2023, panic swept across social media when an image surfaced showing an explosion near the Pentagon. The image appeared authentic, and several verified Twitter accounts shared it. It depicted a plume of black smoke rising from a government building, suggesting a possible terrorist attack or missile strike.
In March 2022, during the height of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a shocking video began circulating on social media and even made its way onto a hacked Ukrainian news website. The video featured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appearing to issue a national address in which he told Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their arms and surrender to Russian forces.
In early 2024, just before the New Hampshire presidential primary, voters received strange robocalls featuring President Joe Biden's voice. The message? "Stay home and save your vote for the November election."

I don't have room for a tv so I have a large lg monitor with a tuner card. I want to use a regular bluray player and watch it on my computer without using the tuner card as it distorts the image alot. The monitor has an hdmi connection and the video card only has analog (the computer is 7 years old). Is there a way to plug it into one of them and watch it just like you would if the monitor was a tv? Do I need a program to recognize the player?
You should be able to directly connect the HDMI port on the back of the Blu-ray player to the HDMI port on the monitor. In most cases, connecting your Blu-ray player to your computer won't work, because older video cards don't includeHDCP support on the VGA connection. HDCP is a content protection feature that works when all components, including the player and monitor are able to decode the connected signal.
One caveat to connecting your Blu-ray player to your monitor is that you may need some kind of external speaker connection also. If your monitor doesn't include a speaker or headphone jack, you will need to connect the audio from the back of the Blu-ray player to some external speakers in order to hear audio from the Blu-ray player.
Thanks! It'd be nice if they had an audio jack on the player but thankfully there's a headphone jack on the monitor that I found later on. My speakers are making things difficult as they have no line in jack and my desk makes getting at the the speaker's plug a difficult and prolonged process.
I guess it would be up to the monitor's software as to whether or not I could toggle back and forth between the comp and hdmi input while both were running but as far as I can tell the first one plugged in gets precedence and the other ignored.
Do you happen to know of any adapter that modifies the signal so older monitors can understand it? My monitor shows the Samsung thing and then error messages change input to 1600x900 60hdz or something like that. Could you help me with it. I'm basically a dumby with most of this stuff.
Contrary to the DVD CSS, which was definitely compromised once the unique encryption key had been discovered, Blu-ray uses stronger DRM mechanisms, which makes it a lot more difficult to manage. Firstly, the AACS standard uses a lot more complicated cryptographic process to protect the disc content, but also allows the industry to revoke compromised keys and distribute new keys through new discs. Secondly, Blu-ray may also use another layer of protection: BD+. Although most of commercial discs use AACS, a few of them additionally use BD+. In 2007, the AACS system was compromised and decryption keys were published on the Internet. Many decryption programs were made available, but the interest to Linux users was the capability of playing their discs - legally purchased - on their computers. Although the industry was able to revoke the first leaked decryption keys, new keys are regularly published in a cat and mouse play.
libaacs is a research project from the VideoLAN developer team to implement the Advanced Access Content System specification, and distributed as an open-source library [5]. This project does not offer any key or certificate that could be used to decode encrypted copyrighted material. However, combined with a key database file, it is possible to use it to play Blu-ray discs that use the AACS standard. This file is called KEYDB.cfg and is accessed by libaacs in $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS/aacs. The format of this file is available at [6].
Note that it is the disc that contains the MKB. MKBs have been renewed since the first commercial Blu-ray release in 2006. The latest MKB is version 78, and many discs actually share the same MKB.
