Apartment Applications: 5 Things You Should Include

............................................................

Applying for an apartment can feel similar to applying for a job at times. In many ways, you’ll need similar documents and items. Even though the process is extensive, once you have your new apartment, it will all be worth it. But it’s important you know about things that should be included in your application. That’s why we’re going to look at the five must-haves that should be on your application.

Identification

Much like any other application, you’ll need to prove who you are. You’ll need to bring in some form of photo I.D. so the landlord can make a copy and add this to your application. Without I.D., you won’t be able to rent your dream two-bedroom apartment in downtown Phoneix. A driver’s license should be sufficient, but a passport would also work in this situation.

Pay Stubs

On your application, you’ll need to state how much money you make each month. You’ll need to prove this through pay stubs or some other form of an income statement. Most of the time, landlords require you to make two to three times the monthly rent. They’ll want to verify this before they approve you for the apartment. Be sure the pay stubs are recent and from the last several months.

Bank Statements

The next thing you’ll want to include in your application is bank statements. This is important to show you’re in good standing with your bank and can afford the apartment. You’ll want to use recent statements from within the last three to six months. The landlord may specify how they want these. Generally, you’ll want bank statements spanning a couple of months.

Social Security Number

This is very important for your application. The landlord will check your credit history, which can significantly impact whether or not you’ll be approved. You'll be fine if you’ve paid your bills on time and never had issues with overdue loans, unpaid bills, etc. They just want to see if you’re trustworthy in the sense of paying for things that need to be paid. If your credit score isn’t great, there are many things you can do to fix it.

Rental References and History

Another essential thing to include with your application is references from previous landlords and some form of rental history. This isn’t always possible for everyone. But having something is better than nothing. Even if you’ve lived with family and friends, you can have them create a letter of recommendation for your application.
